Thank you Dr Takeda and the Takeda Foundation and Dr Matsubara and the committee who chose me to share this wonderful honour with Dr Fodor - and it's a double honour that I share it with such a distinguished scientist as Dr Fodor.
The work and the ideas that are honoured by this award weren't only mine, but they included contributions from many brilliant students and fellows who worked with me and unfortunately I can't name them all, or this speech would be an hour long. But I thank them all, and we certainly wouldn't have accomplished what we did without, in particular, Dari Shalon's contributions in building the first working micro-array system in my lab; Joe Derisi's extraordinary work in making the technology reliable and easy to use and applying it to really great problems; and Mike Eisen's brilliant work in developing the ideas and software that we rely on for data analysis.
And I also want to acknowledge and to thank my colleague for the last 10 years, David Botstein, who has been my scientific partner in many of the developments using DNA micro-arrays. And I want to acknowledge my mentors, especially Nick Cozzarelli and Harold Varmus, who gave me a great example to follow and have been continuing to provide inspiration for my entire scientific career. And most importantly I want to thank my familyc my parents who've always inspired me to do my best, my wonderful wife Sue, my three terrific kids - my daughter Ariel, my sons Zach and Isaac - who inspire me everyday. Thank you very much.
