THE TAKEDA FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES A CALL FOR TOPICS FOR ITS 2003 GRANT PROGRAM - The Takeda Techno-Entrepreneurship Award Funds R&D Which Aspires to Create New Technologies Release Date: January 20, 2003 MENLO PARK, Calif. and TOKYO, January 2003 - The Takeda Foundation has announced a call for topics for the third annual Takeda Techno-Entrepreneurship Award. The Takeda Techno-Entrepreneurship Award provides research and development (R&D) grants to researchers who aspire to create new technologies that will generate substantial value for people. These R&D grants will be awarded to individual researchers, or groups of researchers, in three fields: information/electronics, the life sciences, and the environment. The monetary value for each of the three grants will be a maximum of 7 million yen (approximately US$58,000). The Takeda Techno-Entrepreneurship Award requires that the funded research have practical applications or lead to the creation of a commercialized product in the near future. Grant recipients are selected through a competitive process based on the merit of their research proposal. At the same time, this award aims to provide opportunities for collaboration among participants, as well as the opportunity to communicate with venture capital "angels"/financiers about the potential for new business creation. All of these objectives are facilitated through participation in "cyber (online) workshops." Participants present the originality of their research proposals, and respond to questions posed by the workshop chairman and by other participants. These workshop dialogues are taken into consideration for winner selection. The Foundation is currently requesting suggestions for session topics in each of the three fields until February 28th, 2003. The objective of this suggestion process is to identify the most appropriate workshop sessions by asking a wide audience which research topics they view as contributing the most value to people's lives. Suggestions are welcome from any field. After the session topics are determined, the call for research proposals will occur between May 1st and May 30th, 2003. (Please note that suggesting a session topic does not qualify one for receipt of a R&D grant. It is necessary to submit a research proposal once the session topics are set.) The Takeda Techno-Entrepreneurship Award is open to individuals of all nationalities and all organizational affiliations (e.g. company, university, or independent). SRI International, a leading non-profit research institute based in Menlo Park, California, is working with the Foundation to expand the global reach of its programs.
