Intent of the Foundation's Establishment The application of
electronic measurement technologies, which has evolved from developments
in electronic engineering, has made it possible to ensure the reliability
of high-performance electronic devices. The provision and application of
these devices have brought about greater happiness and richness of life
for mankind. By their nature, measurement technologies require even greater
precision and performance than the electronic technologies incorporated
in the various types of electronic devices. As a result, measurement technologies
have brought about an increase in the level of existing capabilities in
electronic technology. This higher level of electronic capabilities has,
in turn, given rise to new electronic measurement technologies. In other
words, as electronic measurement technologies and electronic technologies
grow and develop, each contributes to the improvement of the other. For
example, VLSI testers have improved semiconductor technologies, and the
increased sophistication of semiconductor technologies has given rise to
the next-generation of VLSI testers. This is to say that the creation and
application of advanced electronic measurement technologies (i.e., Advanced
Measurement Intellect), and advanced electronic technologies have resulted
in significant contributions to improving the high-level information systems
that now form the foundation of our society. Particularly in recent years,
as we strive to achieve a more harmonious society, the role of Advanced
Measurement Intellect has grown increasingly important in the context of
three essential application fields: information and electronics, life sciences,
and the environment. Seeking out related research themes and individuals
involved in the field of Advanced Measurement Intellect is critical to
the further development and improvement of Advanced Measurement Intellect
in the context of the three application fields noted above. In order to
accomplish this, we must offer support for research and researchers involved
in electronic measurement-related technologies. These areas have received
little attention as critical supporting technologies, and continued research
in these areas is difficult, despite the goal of eventual implementation,
due to problems such as lack of research funds. It is also essential to
provide similar support for advanced electronic technologies that give
rise to new electronic measurement technologies. In this context, Ikuo
Takeda, a leader in the field of Advanced Measurement Intellect and its
application and the founder of Takeda Riken Industry Co., Ltd. (currently
Advantest Corporation), in an effort to promote the activities of individuals
involved in Advanced Measurement Intellect, has offered to fund these support
operations and activities. In keeping with the background described above,
we have established the Takeda Foundation with the following goals in mind:(1)
We will present awards to groups and individuals that have demonstrated
outstanding achievements in the creation and application of Advanced Measurement
Intellect in the three application fields of Information and Electronics,
Life Sciences, and the Environment.(2) By assisting researchers and research
that can be expected to contribute to the creation and application of Advanced
Measurement Intellect, we will strive to promote Advanced Measurement Intellect,
and in doing so, contribute to the healthy development of an international
society and to the further happiness and richness of life for mankind. The
