International Policy Dialogue 2012 Summary

Ecosystems for Regional Innovation in Asia

The main topic of the International Policy Dialogue 2012 is “Ecosystems for Regional Innovation in Asia”. Asia includes a variety of countries: Indonesia has a population of 230 million, and is now called the third big power; Myanmar is finally beginning to open its country, and is expected to enjoy a bright future with its large population with a high literacy rate; Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos will experience great economic expansion due to their ever growing populations. We invite representatives from the science and technology communities of these countries, as well as advanced ASEAN countries, to discuss ecosystems for regional innovation, which is the driving force of regional economic growth.

The Invited Speeches introduce three important figures, Dr. Aung Kyaw Myat, Director General of the Minister of Science and Technology of Myanmar, Dr. Thaweesak Koanantakool, President of the National Science and Technology Development Agency of Thailand, and Dr. Hiroyuki Watanabe, President of ITS Japan. Dr. Aung Kyaw Myat will talk about Myanmar’s strategies for science and technology and their international cooperation. Dr. Thaweesak will talk about Thai’s strategies for renewable energy development, especially biomass, the main source of which exists in Southeast Asia. Dr. Watanabe will speak about the intelligent transport system (ITS), trying to achieve a non-traffic accident society, and their efforts to spread ITS in Asia.

The Panel Discussion will provide an opportunity to hear what representatives from the Asian science and technology communities think about ecosystems for regional innovation in Asia.
